October 2009

is finally hooked up with internet!

on Saturday, 3rd October 2009 - 9:28
After a long and hard struggle with determining what services were available in our area - we finally got hooked up with T-Mobile's webconnect USB stick. We both prefered mobile internet to static - since we plan to travel to Toronto and back and also - T-mobile allows for free wifi usage in T-mobile hot-spots world-wide! This means when Steph is off on his conferences or workshops, it'll be that much easier to connect.

in search of work..

on Monday, 5th October 2009 - 12:11
Today is the first day I've had the time and energy to start searching for work. Resume posted on monster.com; a quick browse with applications sent off to the few desirable jobs; followed by the usual fluttering butterflies and anticipatory nervous energy wondering how long it will take for a head hunter or perspective employer to bite. The whole question of having an SSN or not - poses a slight worry. I know I qualify for the NAFTA TN Visa - but that said - I hope it doesn't become a chicken & egg scenario!

at the Drupal Boston Meet up

on Tuesday, 6th October 2009 - 20:39

At my first Drupal Boston meet up - lightening presentations by Christefano, Peter, Ed, Kelley, Erik, Jake, Scor,  & Dave.

Christefano & Lee (a Drupal husband and wife team) started off talking about a Drupal-based facebook-like site for kids featuring facial recognition.  http://whatswhat.me

It's another rainy day, but Canadian Thanksgiving weekend is almost here!

on Wednesday, 7th October 2009 - 8:11

Its another rainy day in Boston. Medford isn't looking too hot either. Looking out the window at the wet deck - rain drops falling. I'm hoping it will clear by afternoon so I can run out and get some groceries.

Today is a cleaning day - need to wash the floors, clean the surfaces and bathroom. My parents are coming to town & of course I'll be wanting to give them a good impression of our new home. I'll be posting pictures after their visit!

And like a storm.. they were gone!

on Tuesday, 13th October 2009 - 12:27

The parental units were down this weekend for an incredible first Thanksgiving weekend at our new home in Medford.  We had a few eventful days!  For one, we are now the proud owners of our very own TV!  Doesn't seem like a big deal - but to go from a 17" old box set in Ireland - to a large sized flat screen (with better resolution than my computer screen), is a big deal!  We also obtained countless minor necessities from the likes of Ikea, Kmart, & Sears.  I have a rice cooker again! The house is back to being quiet and empty except for Maya and me...

Had a blast in the #BostonDrupalVan heading up from Boston (and some of us from as far away as New York) to Montreal with Susan at the wheel and lots of talk and munchies!  Am really pleased to have met such a nice group of drupalers and looking forward to the talks for tomorrow.

At present being hosted at Casa De Silva (Samangi's house) for the two nights that I'm here.  Already made a run to Loblaws to pick up some tidbits for my better half who's slaving away at home.

#drupalbostonvan, #drupalcampmtl: Update & last night's sushi feast!

on Sunday, 18th October 2009 - 9:40

After a long and fantastic day of sessions at Drupal Camp Montreal, I had the distinct feeling that my brain was fried.  I enjoyed the keynote which warmed us all up for what was to come.

The #bostondrupalvan and back!

on Monday, 19th October 2009 - 12:28

Several BOFs were carried out last night enroute to Boston with Lisa, Susan, Jeannie, Travis, and myself. Incidentally we also got held up in customs due to yours-truly and I am greatly thankful for their patience (and nonchalance) at having to wait an extra 1.5 hours to cross the border. ;)

That said, I'm officially a glorified house-wife with a CAPITAL H-4! :) I still qualify for the TN and customs were happy to reassure me that I could return once I have a job offer suiting my credentials. PHEW!

My dog Maya

I thought I'd give a little time and attention to Maya on my blog. She gave me quite the run around today.

Just installed Cumulus Module

on Tuesday, 20th October 2009 - 13:24

The Cumulus Module in Drupal creates the funky flash(?) driven animated tag cloud that you see on my page. The instructions were pretty simple - to download the module and also download a cumulus.js file to the cumulus directory.

Thereafter, the really tricky bit was to find the 'number' of my tags vocabulary.  When you're on your taxonomy page roll your mouse over 'edit vocabulary' for your desired vocab - in my case 'Tags' to find out which number it is (in this case #4).

Dog collar for trainingI've recently purchased the Gentle Leader Headcollar for Maya.  I stopped on the way back from Petsmart and did a quick read of the instructions before installing it on her head.

Installed new jQZoom module!

I'm testing the new jQZoom module (still in development).  That said, it's a pretty cool tool!

How to review a patch (from scratch!) #Drupal #Drupal7

on Tuesday, 20th October 2009 - 22:30
1.  Find a patch worth reviewing - in this case we're following #537828 which I was introduced to back during the documentation sprint at DrupalConParis.

2.  Read the issue and ascertain what's been going on and where the patch comes from and what it is doing.

Maya's origins: Save a sato! http://saveasato.org/

on Wednesday, 21st October 2009 - 15:28

So the story behind Maya's origins remains a mystery - but that said - she was originally adopted from the Worcester Animal Rescue League and she came to the US via the Save a Sato project.  They have an informative video on their website as well as before & after shots of the rescue dogs.  It's hard to think of Maya starved with three puppies having been dumped at a church being rescued by a vet and then given to the shelter.  I think that only one of her puppies survived and has also been ad

The runaround with dishes...

*Deep breath out*

The amount of hassle buying a simple set of everyday use casual dinnerware warrants a blog entry.  Yes, I'm talking about plates.

being home w/o @scorlosquet

on Tuesday, 27th October 2009 - 20:44

Its not the easiest thing to be in a new town without the company of your nearest and dearest. Steph is off in Washington at the 8th Int. Semantic Web Conference (ISWC2009).  I'm very proud of his work and support him as I can.  The coolest thing is that RDFa is now a part of Drupal7 core - which makes Drupal that much more competitive in the market at large as it takes its first steps into the next generation of the web.
